Noteworthy Android applications

I recently asked my Twitter followers what their favorite Android application was. I got a lot of replies and I was happily surprised by the wide variety of apps mentioned. I often mention apps and games I like on Twitter but this little experiment convinced me it would be nice to do the same on this blog and spend more time to talk about each app. Don’t expect full reviews or ratings, just thoughts about applications and games I enjoy using or I find useful. I will probably talk about some apps I found about thanks to your awesome replies to my Twitter question.

To open this new series of articles, I would like to start by showing you my home screen. I use an unmodified version of “stock” Android running on a NexusOne (and I won’t tell you which version I am running.)

Among these various applications and games, the ones I use the most these days are Gmail, Talk and TweetDeck. Since I work at Google the first two are hardly surprising. I was using the official Twitter application until I saw so many people recommend TweetDeck yesterday. Aside from a few bugs and a couple of minor gripes I really like it so far.

Sex Places is by our old friend (ENEMY) Michael Quach, famed Android Market app distributor (fire bomber). It is literally nothing more than a list of places where people might conceivably have sex. No instructions, just some places.

Here’s the description:

100 places where people have sex!

Check out some of the most exotic, fun, creative, cool, awesome, odd, weird, wild & erotic sex places! Bet you haven’t done it at some of these places! Share these sex places via SMS, Email, Twitter or Facebook!

Here’s where Michael Quach thinks people might do it:

On top of a hill. Isn’t that an evocative notion? Here’s a great review from the Android Marker comments: “Just lists random places. Some impossible to do”. At least he’s cleaned up his UI.

GOOD APP: No Lock

This is the simplest app we’ve yet featured. No Lock has just the one function – disabling the swipe unlocking requirement of Android 2.x handsets.

Once installed, you stick a widget on the Home screen and use it to toggle the screen lock on and off. That’s all it does.

Basically it lets you turn your phone on and off from standby without the extra swipe. Any button press wakes it up. The extra swipe was annoying me. Now it is gone. Not good for people who pocket their phones, but ideal if your phone is mainly desk based.

Vlingo Android App Now Lets You Check-in to FourSquare via Voice
Are you a heavy Foursquare user? I mean, can't you live without checking-in to Foursquare everytime you arrive at a certain place? How does checking-in to Foursquare by simply saying, well "check-in to name of place" sounds? Well, surprisingly, you can now do this using Vlingo Voice Android app.It was quite a surprise really. Vlingo and Foursquare teaming up to make the otherwise "boring" task of FourSquare check-in a little bit exciting and easier.
Angry Bird for Android

As of today, that-famous-iPhone-game is now also available on Android Market!!! If you haven’t play it before, you ought to try it. Its really addicting and useful to kill time whenever you’re bored. On the iPhone world itself, this game has been so phenomenal that it is sitting on the top spot of Apple App Store for a while.

Sadly, the game is only available to 2nd generation Android phone, so probably it wont be available for those who are still using Donut(1.6) and below.

The game is still in Beta, so please let us know what you think of the game. Is it going to rock the world just as its iPhone cousin does?
